Scientists in France and discovered a way of analyzing old wine bottles to check if they are real of fakes. It is not just a matter of taking a sample and doing the odd chemical test to check for age. High science is now involved. The test involves the use of a particle accelerator. The bottle is placed in the path of an ion particle beam and then measures the the X-ray radiation emitted. This method can measure the composition of the glass. Glass has different elements in it depending on the date of production, so this test can narrow down the age and place of manufacture.

From the Manufacturer Pinzon is proud to present the Penguin Wine Opener–a reliable and easy-to-use wine opener. Simply follow these easy instructions to use the foil cutter, wine opener, and stopper, and you’ll be opening bottles in no time. To use the Pinzon Penguin Foil Cutter: * Position the circular foil cutter over the top of the bottle. * Press the sides of the cutter in lightly and twist a couple of times around the bottle. * The foil top neatly removes to expose the cork. To Use the Pinzon Penguin Wine Opener: 1. The sleek Penguin is designed to effortlessly remove a wine bottle cork. 2. Raise the lever and clamp the Penguin down over the neck of the bottle. 3. Grasp the rubberized inserts securely with one hand to hold the bottle steady. 4. Use the other hand to lower and then raise the lever in one smooth motion. (Although you cant see it, the corkscrew enters and pulls out the cork.) 5. With the lever up, lift the Penguin off the bottle. The cork will be inside the Penguin. 6. Lower and raise the lever again, and voilà! The cork slides off the corkscrew. Note: The Penguin can be used to open wines bottled with regular corks, but careful use is advised when opening bottles with synthetic corks. To Use the Pinzon Penguin Stopper: * The stopper preserves for days on end the bouquet and flavor of a partially consumed bottle of wine. * Plastic ridges on the stopper collar help provide an airtight seal. To Replace a Cork Screw on the Pinzon Penguin Opener: * Raise the lever and find the largest of three Philips screws in the body of the Penguin. * Unscrew the largest Philips screw to release the cork screw. * Pull out the Penguin screw and insert the replacement into underneath the lever. Then, re-insert and screw in the Philips screw where it was removed from. Cleaning Instructions: * Wipe clean with a damp towel and let air dry. Do not put into dishwasher.

It’s not often that you could grab two wines that each retail under $11 and know that you’re in for some great drinking, but this week we manage just that. The first is a semillon that is so inexpensive you’ll only need loose change to get hold of it. The next bargain is a late harvest semillon which doesn’t overplay the sweetness. And finally we look at another Coonawarra Cab. Sauv. from the great 04 vintage.

This is a well rounded Henri Gualco creation. Chateau Etang des Colombes (11200 Lézignan Corbières). Chateau Etang des Colombes is one of the top Corbieres producers and ranks well overall for French wine makers. They create some wonderful and have international medals galore to prove it. If this producer can produce such high quality wines often from very low yield old vines (Vielles Vignes) at under 10€ a bottle then you know how much you are overpaying for certain wines from ‘famous’ regions.
Now about the wine: Good deep Ruby/Garnet colour. Complex nose with spicy earth tones, with a liquorice hint.
On the palate the are rich ripe red fruits (Black Cherry, Black Currents and plum) rounded with with soft vanilla in the finish ( from 8 months oak aging). This wine comes with a good juxtaposition between the complex and the relaxed.
Cost = 7€ a bottle

Wine Verse by Richard on November 23rd, 2008
Lord, send me staggering with the wine
Of Your love!
Ring my feet
With the chains of Your slavery!
Empty me of everything but Your love
And in it destroy and resurrect me!
Any hunger You awaken
Can only end in Feast!
