Chateau Serres Ste Lucie ~ CUVEE MARQUISE 2006

Posted in French Red Wine  by Richard on February 28th, 2009

A nice bottle of grape juice. A nice even garnet colour flows into the glass. There is a woody liquorice nose to welcome to get gulging. On the palate it is warm and spicy. There are cinnamon and vanilla notes vying with ripe rich plum and wild cherry, with a tad of a mellow woody finish. All in all a decent wine and very good value for money.

Winner of a silver medal at the 2007 Concours des Grand vins du Languedoc-Roussillon

Cost 6€ a bottle.

WineWeek 111: Three wines you’ll want to drink again and again and again.

Posted in Wine Tasting Videos  by Richard on February 28th, 2009

Some wines are made for special occasions. Some are so sweet or so powerful that one glass is enough. The three wines we look at this week are perfect examples of wines built for everyday drinking. The first is an Eden Valley riesling from one of Australia’s finest wineries. The second is a cabernet that comes in at a bargain price and provides great value for money. The last wine is a shiraz, viognier blend from a McLaren Vale producer whose entire range is proving great drinking.

Chateau du Moulin a Vent ~ 2006

Posted in French Red Wine  by Richard on February 25th, 2009

A nice juicy number. A nice welcoming garnet colour greets you in the glass. It is light on the nose with a slight sweet fruit aroma. On the palate there are complex notes mixing soft fruit tannins with light rich plum and damson high notes with a spicy tobacco finish. A elegant wine and excellent value for money.

Cost 6.50€

Cambodian Wine

Posted in Wine News  by Richard on February 25th, 2009

Banan vineyard the one and only vineyard in Cambodia produces wine and brady from Syrah grapes and also a local grape caled ‘Black Queen‘. It seems there is not a massive local market for wine in Cambodia because most of there production of 8,000 to 10,000 a year are sold to tourists to the vineyard, though the owner hopes in the coming years to export his wine to the Asian market.

Domaine de Perreou 2005 ~ Cuvee du Vieux Chene (Credit Crunch Wine)

Posted in French Red Wine  by Richard on February 24th, 2009

A wine from Jean-Luc Petit & Christian Labatut of Domaine de Perreou (La Pelinguette
32800 Cazeneuve).

Not a wine that hits the mark for me. I found the tannins rather bitter without any fruit notes to mellow them out. Young and tart on the palate and it left me feeling like I had acid indigestion after just a couple of sips. A wine to give a miss.

This wine is a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.

Cost = 4€ a bottle making it very poor value for money.

19th ANNUAL TASTE OF VAIL

Posted in Winery News  by Richard on February 24th, 2009

Vail, Colorado – More than 50 wineries will participate in the highly anticipated food and wine festival, Taste of Vail. Over four days in April, wine connoisseurs and budding aficionados will taste new varietals and learn from the winemakers themselves. Numerous educational seminars, entertaining dinners and the après ski wine tasting event will allow engaging interaction with the winemakers introducing their latest and finest wines.

Held over one of the last ski weekends of the season at the top ski resort in America, Taste of Vail is a true epicurean adventure. Gary Eberle of Eberle Winery has been an integral part of Taste of Vail for 18 years, and has always appreciated the festival’s support. He says, “Winemakers tend to be skiers, and it is such a great event where you could get winemakers to show up because we can ski and sell wine, and it’s a natural. There are great restaurants and everything you need to make a great event, all in Vail.”

Unlike other wine and food festivals, Taste of Vail has always emphasized the importance of the winemaker attending and interacting with guests, Mr. Eberle comments, “So many of the events have the marketing representatives, but at Vail, it’s the owner or winemaker and the committee has been good at enforcing that. So a guest actually sits down with the person who made the wine or who owns the winery. And I think that makes this a very special event that I will go out of my way to get to.”

Kicking off with a lamb cook-off competition on April 1st and closing with the Grand Tasting and Dinner Dance on April 4th, Taste of Vail offers something for everyone. An all inclusive pass allows access to all seminars, dinners and tastings. Alternatively, a guest can select a few seminars from $30 to $50 a ticket or attend the Grand Tasting for $175 where winemakers present their finest wines and chefs create their most savory dishes.
