Tommolo Montepulciano d’Abruzzo 2007 8.7.

Posted in Wine Tasting Videos  by Richard on July 31st, 2009

The Montepulciano grape is lighter in style, slightly vitreous, higher in its acid profile. This particular wine is subdued in its initial taste. This wine gives notes of black cherry and finishes prominently with cedar, pepper and sweet spices. Overall this is a drier wine than might command food—Marinara-based food.

This wine another fine selection at Trader Joes and I continue to be pleasantly surprised with a $4.99 retail. And there’s more..its organic! I don’t just review wines found @ Trader Joes—however—I am just finding outstanding values that are easy on the pocket book and make their offering makes it possible to enjoy wine without emptying your wallet. Wine Week 133: Not always what you expect from them.

Posted in Wine Tasting Videos  by Richard on July 31st, 2009

A few weeks back we raved about a Chardonnay that has changed what people expect from the grape. This week we look at the Shiraz from the same guys, Shaw + Smith, and find ourselves equally impressed! We also look at another shiraz, this a classically Barossan offering from Epsilon. To round things out we also check out a still white from one of the most respected producers of sparkling wine, Domaine Chandon.

Greenopia Rates 25 Major Wine Brands.

Posted in Wine News  by Richard on July 30th, 2009

Santa Barbara, CA (PRESS RELEASE) July 29, 2009 — Today Greenopia (http://www.greenopia.com)released comprehensive rating of 25 major wine labels in terms of sustainability. At the top of the list, receiving 3 leafs out of a possible 4, were Alma Rosa (http://www.almarosawinery.com), Frog’s Leap (http://www.frogsleap.com), and French Rabbit (http://www.frenchrabbit.com).

Environmentalists are often concerned with the tremendous amount of water and land needed to produce wine. Wine bottles also have a significant environmental impact associated with their production and transport, something only a few wineries have addressed. How does a green wine enthusiast know which wines are most eco friendly?

We are proud and honored to be recognized by Greenopia for our deep longstanding 25-year commitment to organic viticulture, sustainability, and fair business practices
We pledge to continue our efforts toward environmental responsibility and social justice.
We were surprised to see so many wineries that hadn’t addressed the environmental impacts associated with their bottles. Glass bottles not only have a large production burden, but their heavy weight gives them a high transportation impact as well. We hope that wineries and consumers will mutually embrace greener containers for wine in spite of their perceptions about quality
The study completed by Greenopia, and available for free on its website, strives to answer this question. The ratings were completed as part of Greenopia’s mission to educate consumers on issues pertaining to environmental impact and health on a purchasing level.

“We are proud and honored to be recognized by Greenopia for our deep longstanding 25-year commitment to organic viticulture, sustainability, and fair business practices,” said Thekla and Richard Sanford, owners of Alma Rosa Winery & Vineyard. “We pledge to continue our efforts toward environmental responsibility and social justice.”

Greenopia used a comprehensive set of criteria to determine the wine company ratings. Data was collected from the companies themselves pertaining to the growing practices, transportation, building logistics, and attributes of the wine packaging. Weights were set based off the relative life cycle impacts of each criterion during wine production.

“We were surprised to see so many wineries that hadn’t addressed the environmental impacts associated with their bottles. Glass bottles not only have a large production burden, but their heavy weight gives them a high transportation impact as well. We hope that wineries and consumers will mutually embrace greener containers for wine in spite of their perceptions about quality,” says Gay Browne, founder of Greenopia.

To find green wine merchants in your city check out Greenopia’s local green business directories.

Greenopia employs its award-winning eco-analysis method to deliver actionable green-assessments to the rapidly growing green consumer market. Green businesses and merchants use Greenopia’s targeted marketing methods to effectively reach consumers making greener choices.

About Greenopia: The leading online directory for green, sustainable and socially conscious, daily purchase decisions. Greenopia provides the market’s only independent rating and ranking of green services and products. Epicuro Nero d’Avola 2007

Posted in Wine Tasting Videos  by Richard on July 29th, 2009

The Nero d’Avola grape is nearly synonymous with Sicily and indigenous to Italy. Nero means black and the southeast Sicillian village of its origin is Avola hence Nero d’Avola. Its a long name but a formidable wine low alcohol 13% its bursting with notes of roasted blueberry, baking spices and wooded underbrush, drier than you might expect with silky tannins basking this dark inky wine. This is a fantastic Nero dAvola and for the price I couldnt believe I just paid $4.99 a bottle at Trader Joes. It is in fact one of the best Nero dAvolas I have had in some time. The glass I drank this from cost more than the bottle price.

Chasse Gardée 2006 ~ Fitou

Chasse Gardée 2006 ~ Fitou

Chasse Gardée 2006 ~ Fitou

This first thing I noticed about this wine was the nose. Acetone seared my sinuses. On the palate the tannins sucked the moisture out of my mouth and coated my tongue and teeth. There is also a vaguely chemical aftertaste they made me feel the need to rush to the bathroom and brush my teeth. This is the worst wine I’ve every had from Mont Tauch who normally produce drinkable wines at a decent price. This wine was neither of those things,

Cost = €5.99 a bottle
